Varicose veins, a common vascular condition, affect 10-20% of the population. The underlying cause is increased venous pressure due to prolonged standing, pregnancy, trauma, or liver disease. This results in venous insufficiency, causing blood pooling in veins. Horse chestnut seed extract is widely used to support venous wall function and improve blood flow in chronic venous insufficiency. Scientific studies have shown the benefits of this extract in alleviating symptoms like leg heaviness, pain, swelling, and inflammation. The aescin in horse chestnut extract enhances venous tone, reduces vascular permeability, and improves edema associated with inflammation. It inhibits lysosomal enzymes, reducing membrane and venous wall degradation. A double-blind study on 40 patients with chronic venous insufficiency showed reduced leg swelling and pain with horse chestnut extract. In a study of 240 patients over 2 weeks, 50 mg of horse chestnut extract twice daily showed better results compared to placebo and compression methods like bandages or stockings.
